Music rights on tour, the jazz edition
This panel about music rights is Dutch spoken.
For many musicians it remains an almost impossible puzzle to solve: music and law. Who receives payments from Buma/Stemra and what do you have to do to receive them? Does the whole band have to join Buma/Stemra? Do I get money from Sena for performances? When is it convenient to become a member of NORMA? What exactly is the situation with neighbouring rights, who receives compensation from NORMA and Sena?
In order to answer these questions and more once and for all, the Dutch collecting societies have joined forces in the Music Rights on Tour initiative. During inJazz they will make a start on the basis of one clear case, together with an artist, a publisher, and a composer and/or session musician. For everyone who wants to get the most out of music rights! Together with Benjamin Herman, one the greatest jazz musicians of the Netherlands, they are looking forward to welcoming you at this panel.

Benjamin Herman got his first saxophone at the age of twelve. His fame spread beyond jazz circles in the 1990s when he formed the groundbreaking ensemble New Cool Collective. Having made a name as soloist while still a teenager, Benjamin Herman has appeared on over a hundred records with all kinds of artists, from Candy Dulfer to Misha Mengelberg. Today Benjamin Herman is one of the most original and productive jazz musicians in the Netherlands exploring influences beyond the confines of the jazz world. After starting his own record label ‘Roach Records’ in 2004 Benjamin Herman produced a string of cd’s and vinyl’s. He recorded and toured with amongst others Paul Weller, Dr. John, Tony Allen, Stan Tracey, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Peter Maffay, programmed several festivals, played all over the globe and worked on numerous personal projects. In 2018 to celebrate his 50th birthday Benjamin has released ‘Project S’, an ode to Johan Cruyff’s car of choice the ‘Citroën SM’ and ‘Bughouse’ with guitar player Reinier Baas, bassist Peter Peskens (Jungle By Night) and legendary hard core drummer Olav van den Berg (Lärm, Seein’ Red, Marxbros). In October Benjamin will be releasing an album with his jazz trio featuring young Dutch soloists.
Martijn Crama runs a management agency and represents TAPE TOY. Alongside working as an artist manager, Crama is a consultant in the music industry advising both artists and music organizations about their career plan. In 2018 Martijn released his first book for ambitious and debuting musicians called ‘Basisbagage’. A management curriculum designed for music conservatory students of the ArtEZ Popacademy was designed by Martijn.
