Mark Lotz – Freshta

Originating as a composition assignment for BumaStemra and the VNJJ, Freshta pays tribute to the legacy of Freshta Kohistani. Kohistani was an Afghan advocate for women’s rights and democracy who was tragically killed by the Taliban at age 29 in 2020. The album, composed by flautist Mark Alban Lotz, is dedicated to honoring the memories of female activists in Asia and Africa. Despite its serious subject, Freshta sounds hopeful, combining the swing of jazz with ethno-influenced sounds. This fits with composer Mark Lotz’s aim: making music that breaks boundaries, while celebrating the remarkable lives of these activists through each piece.
Mark Alban Lotz was born in Germany and raised in Thailand and Uganda. His work continues to take him to all corners of the globe, looking for collaborations with unique voices in music. He is joined by four sounding names in jazz who together create a bright sound, expanded by the usage of electronic effects.
