The Boy Edgar Prize is the most important prize in Dutch jazz and improvised music. As of now, you can register yourself or another jazz musician to be the winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2024. Get the details on how to register and the selection criteria.

How to register

Would you like to be nominated? Or do you want to register someone else to be nominated? Send a short but motivated letter to boyedgarprijs@fondspodiumkunsten.nl before Friday, March 15, 2024, 11:59 PM (CET).

Explain how you or your nominee meet the selection criteria. The number of times someone is nominated does not determine the winner.

The jury, consisting of members with a broad and current knowledge of Dutch jazz and improvised music, is chaired by an independent chairman. They select a winner. For this selection, they take your motivation in account. The selection is based on unanimity. So make your motivation a good one!

Selection criteria

You (or your nominee) have a chance to win the Boy Edgar Prize if you are:

  • Playing musician in Dutch jazz and improvised music;
  • With a track record of several years;
  • Artistically distinctive as a soloist, improviser, composer, arranger, or leader;
  • A pivotal figure and innovator within their genre or movement;
  • Never previously rewarded with the Boy Edgar Prize.

About the Boy Edgar Prize

The Boy Edgar Prize is awarded annually to a performing musician who uniquely contributes to the genre. It doesn’t count as a lifetime achievement or incentive prize. The winner receives prize money of 25.000 euros and the exchange award ‘John Coltrane’ by Jan Wolkers. The winner also has the opportunity to put together a full evening program during the awards ceremony. Previous prize winners are, amongst others, Monica Akihary and Ronald Snijders. Since 2022 the selection process has been organized by The Performing Arts Funds NL. The prize is supported by Buma Cultuur, Sena Performers and North Sea Jazz.
