Tineke Postma & Marc van Roon

Tineke Postma and Marc van Roon are two of the most distinctive voices in Dutch jazz. In this intimate Pocket Concerts performance, saxophonist Tineke Postma – on alto and soprano saxophone – joins forces with pianist Marc van Roon in a duo that combines lyrical melodies, adventurous improvisation and an exceptional sense of musical dialogue.

Postma is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, composer and bandleader. She has performed with artists including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding, Geri Allen and Terri Lyne Carrington, and has appeared at major venues and festivals around the world. Her many honours include the Boy Edgar Prize, the Jazz à Juan Revelations Award and the French Académie du Jazz award for European Musician of the Year. She has also received two Edison Awards, most recently for Aria (2024), her album with Ben Monder, Robert Landfermann and Tristan Rendrow.

Marc van Roon is an accomplished pianist, composer and producer whose career has taken him from the Netherlands to stages across Europe, Asia and the United States. He has worked with artists such as Dave Liebman, Clark Terry, Art Farmer and Susanne Abbuehl, and has recorded extensively as a leader and sideman. He also produced Tineke’s Edison-winning The Dawn of Light.

Their musical partnership spans more than two decades. Now, as a duo, they strip the music down to its essence: two musicians listening, responding and creating in the moment. A meeting of experience, trust and pure improvisational chemistry.

*Digging the Archives
For Digging the Archives, we revisit Soft Shoulders, a composition associated with legendary Dutch trumpeter and flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen (1930 – 2021). Originally recorded in 1975, the original piece has a distinctive bossa nova feel and unfolds through colour and atmosphere rather than a conventional melody. Van Rooyen was one of the founding figures of Dutch jazz, performing with countless leading international and Dutch ensembles. In 2020, he finally received the Boy Edgar Prize, honouring his immense contribution to jazz as a musician, educator and mentor.
