injazz presents WAAN and Ping-En Hung during ESNS

17 December 2024

On Thursday 16 January, Ping-En Hung and WAAN will perform at showcase festival ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) in Groningen. Both acts had already performed at inJazz in Rotterdam last June.

Rotterdam-based quartet WAAN offer a fusion of electronically driven grooves, atmospherically composed melodies, and an eclectic mix of energetic dance, pop, roots, and jazz funk. Bart Wirtz (saxophone) and Emiel van Rijthoven (keyboards) are accompanied by Matteo Mazzù (bass) and Mark Schilders (drums). In the studio, WAAN are assisted by Oscar de Jong of Kraak & Smaak fame. Debut album Echo Echo was released in February of 2023 on German label Sonar Kollektiv, followed by a live EP in June of 2024. Single Casser le Dos (November 2024) is a prelude to their second studio album, expected in 2025.

Ping-En Hung is a composer, jazz bassist, vocalist, theatre-maker and multidisciplinary performer. Born and raised in Taipei, she blends her rich Asian cultural background with the influences of her international Amsterdam experience. Ping-En’s work oscillates between hyperrealism and dreamy surrealism, has theatrical moments alongside beats, jazz and ambient avant-garde. After putting out several EP’s, her first full-length album is in the works for release in spring 2025.

Location of the gigs is club Cilinder in Oosterstraat, located between Vera and eggball specialist Snack Hoek. The gigs will take place between 20:30 and 23:00 and are open to anyone with an Eurosonic festival ticket or an ESNS Conference ticket.
