
Tony Roe wins Boy Edgar Prize 2024

During inJazz Tony Roe was announced as the winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2024. The prize is an initiative of the Performing Arts Fund NL in collaboration with, among others, Buma Cultuur. The jury unanimously chose this jazz pianist, and here’s why.
About Tony Roe
Tony Roe (1979) was born in Amsterdam and studied classical piano at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and jazz piano at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Nowadays, he forms the jazz piano trio ‘Tin Men and the Telephone‘ together with Jamie Peet and Pat Cleaver. Roe has also collaborated with, among others, the Metropole Orchestra, ISH Dance Collective, Noord Nederlands Toneel (NNT), Asko|Schönberg Ensemble, Room Eleven, and Janne Schra. His repertoire now consists of collaborations with Nai Barghouti, Vernon Chatlein, NBE and Ben van Gelder, among others.

This year the jury consisted of Cécile de Vos (chairman), Mike Bindraban, Marieke Meischke, Bart Maris, Maite Hontelé, Corrie van Binsbergen, Shishani Vranckx, Bert van den Brink and Raluca Baicu.
“Pianist, composer, and bandleader Tony Roe is a versatile musician. His mastery of instruments is unmistakable, but it is his free vision of the piano that makes his work distinctive. Roe brings a unique mix of jazz and technology, works across genres and gives the audience experience a new dimension. He is intelligent, committed and an innovator in jazz and improvised music.”

About the Boy Edgar Prize
The Boy Edgar Prize is named after the Amsterdam jazz trumpeter and big band leader Boy Edgar. He made an important contribution to the recognition of jazz as a high-quality art form. Winners receive a cash prize of €25,000 and can receive the bronze exchange sculpture ‘John Coltrane’ (made by Jan Wolkers). The Performing Arts Fund NL has been organizing this prize since 2022. They are supported by Buma Cultuur, Sena Performers and North Sea Jazz.
