Mapping Dutch jazz across the globe
30 July 2024
We look back on inJazz Conference 2024 through a number of short articles in which we offer takeaways from the day’s panel talks and presentations. At the inJazz conference on Thursday 27 June DutchCulture Database and website officer Erin Chang held a presentation about the trends and movements of Dutch Jazz artists around the globe. The facts & figures, including key international cities, festivals, and venues, are taken from the DutchCulture Database, an open-source database that tracks international activities by Dutch artists of all disciplines. You can find the slides to the presentation at the bottom of this post.
As Erin Chang pointed out during the session, the mapping of Dutch jazz (and world) movements internationally is fed by data provided by Dutch embassies and consulates, by cultural funds (like FPK/Performing Arts Fund NL), by artists themselves directly, and by desk research. Therefore, the results covering 2020-2023 as shown in the slides are only the tip of the iceberg. Every Netherlands-based artist who is playing abroad can contribute to the database. Registering at DutchCulture is free, so it is up to the artist to help build a more comprehensive overview of the worldwide network that can benefit the whole sector.
