First injazz bands for 2022 revealed

31 March 2022

InJazz 2022 is first and foremost a free-for-all jazz festival, spread across one night at the BIMHUIS (22 June) and five stages in Rotterdam’s Katendrecht neighbourhood (23 June).

At the end of March, the inJazz selection committee consisting of Raluca Baicu (North Sea Round Town, de Doelen), Frank van Berkel (BIMHUIS, Jazzschip), Sander Grande (MOJO/North Sea Jazz Festival), and Maite Hontelé (Music Meeting), selected 16 bands that will perform (and be recorded) during inJazz 2022. 4 of them can be seen on the night of Wednesday 22 June at BIMHUIS in Amsterdam. 12 will be featured during the inJazz Festival in Rotterdam on 23 June. In the next few weeks all names will be revealed through the inJazz social media channels. And we are happy to give away the first two here!

Marta Arpini pocket orchestra

Composer, vocalist and guitarist Marta Arpini is no stranger to inJazz. Her pocket orchestra was born in 2021 in the recording studio, as an extension of her long time semi-acoustic quintet. With that project, called Forest Light, she performed at inJazz 2020, “the live stream edition”.

For her new album, I Am a Gem, Marta wanted to expand the line-up and integrate more colours into the palette, “giving my music a new garment,” as she puts it. “Now I can’t wait to have the chance to take it also onto the stage, to perform all together and showcase the album with its full arrangements and sounds.”

Pietre

For those who follow what’s going on in jazz made in the Netherlands, this band has some familiar faces. Pietre (‘stones’ in Italian) is the brainchild of bassist Alessandro Fongaro, a quartet he brought together during the second lockdown, in 2021. He describes the music he wrote as “a sort of personal diary, in which I collected all that I went through in that period: love, heartbreaks, friendships and so on.”
